Nine top international bloggers travel to Reunion Island, as the destination's brand-new blog platform is launched.

Explore Reunion Island on a virtual journey of all that this unique destination has to offer – from an active volcano to a crystal-clear lagoon with hiking trails, delicious food, and a rich and interesting culture sprinkled on top.

Created for Reunion Tourism by Destinate and Flow Communications, the new Reunion Island blog aims to engage the South African market and the world with experiential accounts, local tips and stories, people profiles and insider travel notes.

The content generated through the bloggers' trip will be showcased on the new blog and the #gotoReunion social stream will bring the world along on a virtual adventure filled with discovery, which we hope will inspire many to #gotoReunion.

On Thursday, 26 June, nine international bloggers from South Africa and beyond head to Reunion with Air Austral to explore and uncover the highlights and hidden gems of this exciting island.

Our #gotoReunion team of bloggers includes some of the world’s best-known travel bloggers and award-winning television and video producers, as well as a few of South Africa’s top travel and lifestyle bloggers as well as online media.

Hailing from the USA, Brazil, the Netherlands and South Africa, these are the bloggers who will #gotoReunion:

Keith Jenkins, of Velvet Escape and CEO of iambassador, based in the Netherlands

Matthew Karsten, of The Expert Vagabond, based in the USA

Priscilla Reis Magalhaes, of VOALI, based in Brazil

Matty Brown, well-known videographer based in Seattle in the USA

Meruschka Govender, voted one of South Africa's top travel bloggers, based in Johannesburg

Kati Auld, for Getaway magazine, based in Cape Town

Selene Brophy, editor for News24Travel, based in Cape Town

Destinate will be represented by Natalie Roos, a popular travel and lifestyle blogger based in Cape Town.

Yann Macherez, a Reunion Islander now living in Cape Town and a National Geographic Channel Adventure Ambassador, will be our host. He will show the bloggers around and expose them to the hidden gems, the things that make him love Reunion.

He is also a renowned photographer, and will capture the campaign for Reunion Island Tourism. You can see an example of his work here, and a video he did with National Geographic for South African Tourism.

They will meet interesting local personalities, cook with local chefs, enjoy some fine local Creole dining, hike, dive, explore the natural environment to see why almost 50% of the island is a UNESCO Heritage Site, hang out with local musicians and artists, and be taken on a journey into the heart of Reunion.

Some highlights on their itinerary include:

  • A visit to the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, and exploration of lava tubes created by earlier eruptions
  • A visit to one of the typical markets on the sea front, and to the city centre of Saint-Pierre for a cultural tour
  • An underwater whale and dolphin free-diving experience with a team of scientists
  • A sunset horse riding experience in the savanna on the West Coast, followed by a wood fire cooking experience at the ranch
  • A visit to Cilaos village; a drive that winds up 420 bends!
  • A cooking lesson and lunch at Tapalaka B&B
  • Canyoning at Rivière des Roches, on the east coast
  • A meeting with Kid Kreol and Buggy local street art designers
  • A microlight flight over the island, for breathtaking views of its natural diversity
  • A day exploring the crystal clear waters of the lagoon, with standup paddle boards and kayaks
