Reunion Island is gearing up for the Festival Liberté Métisse
The Festival Liberté Métisse is a unifying and colourful festival that celebrates a land of freedom and a place where a combination of cultures live together harmoniously.
The history of the island began more than four centuries ago and it's a land of a thousand faces, where each individual memory is also a great hope offered to the world.
Initiated by the Region Meeting in 2010, the Freedom Festival Metisse is one of the island's must-attend events. It's a unifying festival in the style of La Réunion - as we pay tribute to those who fought for their freedom.
The Freedom Festival Metisse unfolds its 4th edition in Etang-Salé-les-Bains on 19, 20, 21 and 22 December 2014. It forms part of the big celebrations of the 20th of December – a major event for all of Reunion, which marks an important moment in history: the abolition of slavery.
The Freedom Festival Metisse is a time to exercise the duty of memory and to pass the message on to future generations
It further underlines the wealth of cultural contributions from the interactions of people from different corners of the world that have paved the way for a multi-cultural population. It presents the "meeting" of the men and women whose diverse origins helped shape the island's identity. It highlights the lively and expressive Creole culture inherited from our ancestors.
The Freedom Festival Metisse has two aims:
To show the world how special our Métis culture is, highlighting the many different aspects of our society
To enhance Métis identity of Reunion, "miscegenation Earth" which is based on the values of diversity, respect, tolerance, knowledge and skills to live together.
