Technology redefines travelling on Reunion Island
Reunion Island boasts an array of sites that will leave even the most travelled of visitors in awe! However, it is the Piton de la Fournaise and the volcanic plains which surround it that has seen an influx of over 500 000 visitors each year, making it the most sought after destination on the island.
Due to the immense numbers of travellers that hike across the striking volcanic plains, the Country Council of Reunion Island implemented an application to take the natural landscape into a digital space. Named the “Volcano road over time”, the application allows travellers to interact with an artificial guide named “Guardian of the Volcano” which take them back in time to the creation, development and establishment of the Massif de la Fournaise. The guardian will “travel” with hikers across the plains and create a window into the past that show the first settlers who lived and worked within the rugged landscapes.
The app has twelve thematic stopovers spread across the geo-designed terrain. Each stop will give visitors insight into the volcanic site through historical facts, interviews with specialists as well as fun and interactive games that can be enjoyed by the entire family.
