'Welcome to Reunion Island' by local photographer Yann Macherez

  • 24 July 2014 | By Natalie Roos

Yann Macherez was born in mainland France and moved to Reunion Island when he was just a year old. He grew up on the island, and has since become a talented photographer. He shares some of the things he loves most about the island.

One of the best things about Reunion Island is that you can swim in a beautiful pristine lagoon in the morning and hike in a dense tropical forest in the afternoon. As simple as that...

If you want to experience the most adventurous and authentic places on the island, you'll love Mafate. The heart of the island!

Our pride! Le Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. You can even walk into little craters like this one!

Even though I've discovered many types of cuisine all around the world, I will always miss the food from Reunion Island. Juicy tropical fruits, succulent spicy meals and don’t even get me started on the rum...

Your feet deep in the warm sand, the sun is slowly going down. You only hear the waves breaking on the beaches and the wind blowing into the Filaos. Welcome to Reunion Island!

Look at those smiles! I’ve been away for a long time but the legendary kindness of Reunion Island people has stayed the same. I gave my biggest smile to those little boys, in return

If you’re brave enough to climb the 3 069 metres of the Piton des Neiges, you’ll be rewarded with a 360° view all over the Island. Unforgettable! (Tip: go there as early as possible to avoid the clouds)

This brand new highway changed my life and the lives of all Reunionese people. With a scenic journey, La route des Tamarins allows people to reach the two main cities in less than an hour. Half the time that it look before ... An iconic route!
