Reunion Island is a tiny drop in the Indian Ocean yet this island is booming with natural beauty.
And not forgetting about the volcano that is still active, Reunion simply overwhelms with its sensational rugged topography.
This island is an adventurer’s paradise and a photographer’s delight. But adventure would not exist and photos would not be taken without the beautiful nature of Reunion. A unique environment where the mountains merge with the sea, where the undulating relief of the landscape offers magnificent scenery, and where 30% of natural space has remained intact since the island's discovery: Reunion Island confirms its status as a destination with exceptional natural assets.
Dominated by two towering volcanic peaks, massive walls and three cliff-rimmed cirques, the island is made up of a variety of rugged terrain and impressive escarpments, forested gorges and basins creating a visually striking landscape. It is the natural habitat for a wide diversity of plants, subtropical rainforests, cloud forests and heaths that create a remarkable and visually appealing mosaic of ecosystems and landscape features.
But the beauty does not only lie above ground. The Reunion Island’s coral reef is a rich habitat for soft and hard corals that provide food and habitat for an abundance of fish and shellfish. The Natural Marine Reserve extends along 40 km of coastline (20 km of which are coral reef), from Cap La Houssaye in Saint-Paul, to la Roche aux Oiseaux in Etang-Salé. Fish and corals dance in a kaleidoscope of colours and forms, and the sun penetrates through the water like the beam from a projector, bringing the most stunning festival of colours to life, and creating darts of light that glisten on the white sand of the seabed.
Of course, the attraction of Reunion, The Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, shapes the landscape and even gains ground on the ocean itself during certain lava flows. Across the south of the island, the successive lava flows from Piton de la Fournaise have come down to the oceans, creating black sandy beaches with fine, hot sand when the sun is at its highest. The beaches themselves form an exceptional landscape, surrounded by arid plant life.
Reunion’s nature surpasses the imagination with its beauty and will leave you speechless.
