Your Dream Trip to Reunion: Itinerary

Natascha Koning is the lucky winner of our 2015 competition to win a trip for two to Reunion Island. She will be visiting the island with her partner from the 28th of January for an awesome, adventure-filled island experience. We've put together the ULTIMATE bucket-list itinerary for her first visit. This itinerary will give any visitor to Reunion a taste of almost everything the island has to offer.

Day 1

Arrive in Reunion Island

Arrive in Reunion on your Air Austral flight. Collect your car from the rental agency (you'll need one to get around) and exchange your currency. Don't forget to bring your international driver's license.

Drive to your accommodation in the island's capital, Saint Denis.

Day 2


Explore Saint Denis

Strolling through the city of Saint-Denis is fascinating. The buildings are a true testament to the island’s history. Guided tours such as Les Cases Créoles (Creole Houses) or La Compagnie des Indes (the East India Trading Company) are reminders that ‘Ile de Bourbon” was a common stopover for sailors crossing the Indian Ocean. Walking up the magnificent Rue de Paris you’ll come across some beautiful properties, some of which have been transformed into museums, arriving finally at the Jardin de l’Etat (State Gardens).

Drive to Saint-Paul

Visit the typical, colourful market for a taste of the island's seasonal fruits and locals handicrafts.

Spend the night in the seaside town of Saint-Gilles

Day 3

Road to the Maïdo

Up in the hills, the Maïdo is one of the island’s most impressive viewpoints. In the early hours, before a sea of clouds has had the chance to form, you will be amazed by this panorama overlooking the cirque of Mafate.

Relax on the beach

Spend the afternoon relaxing at the lagoon at l’Ermitage (Snorkelling equipment is available at your hotel, should you like to snorkel). In the "natural aquarium" of the lagoon, you can observe underwater life and delight in exploring the coral reef and shoals of coloured fish. It’s a great, fun experience!!

Day 4

Cilaos 1

Explore the Cilaos Caldeira

This rocky cirque is an ideal spot for outdoor sports. It is the starting point for many treks, from the easiest (botanic footpath) to the most demanding (the ascension of the Piton des Neiges). Cilaos also has a thermal spa, which produces its own sparkling water. It is also the privileged home of Reunion’s wine and lentil production.

Check out of your hotel and drive the road to Cilaos. Spend some time visiting of the village of Cilaos.

Day 5


Experience the magnificent volancanic landscapes

A visit to the Piton de La Fournaise

This will be one of your most memorable holiday experiences. At daybreak, the sky turns from black to blue, and you take the road up across the high altitude plains. Bend after bend, the scenery becomes dotted with small peaks as the road rises upwards. Take the time to stop before your descend to embrace the magic of La Plaine des Sables, with its unique lunar landscape, covered with orangey-brown scoria. Please don't forget warm clothes for the volcano, sport shoes, sunscreen, a hat and water.

Suggestion: Don't leave without visiting the “Cité du Volcan” (volcano museum)

Day 6


Explore the Wild South

Check out of your hotel and take the road to the Wild South. Admire the unique character of the basalt rock landscapes of this part of the island.

Stop over at Manapany les Bains, Grand-Anse (magnificent white sandy beaches on the Southern side of the island)

Stop over at Cascade Langevin (Waterfall of Langevin)

Stop over at Cap Méchant, Mare Longue Forest

Suggestion: Visit the Perfume and Spice garden in Saint-Philippe (an enthusiastic guide will show you samples while introducing you to the virtues of biodiversity)

Day 7


Explore hardened lava flows

Visit the lava flows of years gone by on the road to Sainte-Rose and Saint-Benoît on the East coast.

Adventure activity: Horseriding at Grand-Etang with the local riding center.

Day 8


Road to Salazie

This cirque is the greenest, and has the easiest access, with a road winding in all the way to the quiant Creole village of Hell-Bourg. Admire the mountainside flanked with trellises of the chayote fruit. This is also the place to admire one of the island’s most stunning waterfalls, Le Voile de La Mariée, which is the source of an ancient local legend.

Day 9

Reunion House

Explore Salazie

Spend the whole day exploring the cirque of Salazie.

Canyonning at Bassin Boeuf

Spend the day swimming, jumping and canyoning in the waterfalls and pools of Bassin Boef.

Day 11

The journey home

Check out of your accommodation early and take the road to Saint-Denis.
